On 30th November, we had the pleasure of attending the EVolocity event at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, in Christchurch. This event was New Zealand’s ‘first ever day of electric motorsport’ and featured a range of electric vehicles and events.
EVolocity is a motor sport event with an environmental twist – demonstrating electric vehicle performance and efficiency. EVolocity aims to promote the use of electric vehicles while also encouraging New Zealanders to innovate, invent and become involved in the future of transport.
Nathan and Brian with the Nissan LEAF
As well as our own Nissan LEAF – and those of the Christchurch City Council, Orion, and a few private owners – the event was host to Killacycle – the world’s fastest electric drag motor bike (0 to 100km/h in just 1 second!) along with the fastest woman on a motorcycle in the world, Eva Hakansson, 16 Canterbury high school teams and their own electric vehicles, and a variety of privately owned electric vehicles, such as this amazing solar powered vehicle!
A highlight of the event for us was when we were visited by Craig. Craig is currently travelling from Cape Reinga to Bluff in his black Nissan LEAF and documenting his travel on his blog, ‘A Kiwi EVenture‘.
We asked Craig how he was enjoying such a long journey in his LEAF – a 100% electric vehicle – and his response was that he couldn’t be happier! He has attended a number of events and shows along the way and stops at caravan parks to charge his LEAF before moving onto the next destination. In his words, he’ll never go back to a combustion engine again!
Good luck with the rest of your journey, Craig. We look forward to seeing the photos!
We’ll be putting together a video showing a few highlights from the day, so watch this space!
